Best Parking: Secure Parking - 101 Goulburn St, Haymarket NSW 2000

Succeeded: Yes, with approximately 15 minutes remaining

Room Description:
This isn’t just an old house — it’s a playground of forgotten memories.
Somewhere inside are half-finished games, curious puzzles, and strange little clues left behind by a child who once filled these rooms with imagination. Things have been left out of place. Music boxes have gone quiet. The story isn’t over… and you’re the one meant to finish it.
Step through the wardrobe. Bring the pieces back together.
And maybe — just maybe — you’ll hear the melody that was never played.

Comments:

Mission Room Escape have cooked up an absolute doozy with their newest room, The Unplayed Melody. A room that combines clever mechanical design with a genuinely touching story.

We showed up about five minutes late (classic Sydney traffic, plus a side of torrential rain for good measure), and it was clear our GM wasn’t thrilled. We were quickly reminded that being late meant losing time — fair enough, but not the warmest welcome. Thankfully, the tone softened as the experience got underway, and it didn’t take long for the room to win us over.

The Room
Like most of Mission’s games, The Unplayed Melody spans several rooms and feels generous in size. What really stood out here was how well the space was designed — every element felt intentional. The aesthetics were beautiful, nothing looked out of place, and the atmosphere was spot on.

Mission is known for its mechanical puzzles, and this room keeps that tradition alive: solve something, and expect drawers to clang open, furniture to shift, or new elements to be revealed. There were even a few well-timed jump scares that hit just right without feeling forced.

The Experience
What really elevates this room is the story. There’s a clear narrative thread running from start to finish, and it’s more emotionally driven than a lot of other escape rooms out there. It never gets in the way of the gameplay — instead, it gives every puzzle a reason to exist.

As for difficulty, I’d call it easy to medium. It’s very beginner-friendly but still layered enough to keep experienced players engaged. A good balance of accessibility and challenge.

After the Escape
We wrapped up the night with dinner at Shinara Korean BBQ Buffet nearby — all-you-can-eat goodness and sizzling hotplates. It was the perfect way to end a rainy, puzzle-filled night.

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for an escape room that brings together clever mechanics, immersive design, and a genuinely moving story, The Unplayed Melody is absolutely worth your time — even if Sydney’s traffic tries to stop you.

Comments:
The Last Order marked my 22nd escape room experience, and for our group, it was the 19th and final room to conclude our time at Mission Room Escape. Fresh off completing Vampire Castle just 10 minutes earlier, we dove straight into The Last Order. This room was distinct, primarily constituting a single-room escape. While we've encountered similar setups before, The Last Order stood out with its intricate balance of tasks and a captivating storyline to unravel.

In contrast to some of Mission's other rooms with dazzling wow factors, The Last Order leaned heavily on a robust backstory and exceptionally well-crafted puzzles. The method of seeking clues departed from the traditional walkie-talkie system or a voice from the God, opting for a tablet provided at the start. This unique approach added a refreshing layer to the escape room experience, setting it apart from Mission's other offerings.

The puzzles, diverse and cleverly constructed, incorporated various elements that seamlessly fit within the space. Despite lacking the flashy elements found in some of Mission's other rooms, The Last Order compensated with its immersive narrative and engaging puzzles.

With about 15 minutes to spare, we successfully escaped The Last Order, bringing our Mission Room Escape adventure to a close. Until we meet again, Mission, thanks for the memorable rooms and unique experiences!

Comments:
The Vampire Castle marked my 21st escape room adventure, and for our group, it was the 18th. Our visit aimed to partake in The Last Order, wrapping up our exploration of both Mission venues. Aware that the Vampire Castle was considered a beginner's room, our experienced group was well-prepared, though the staff amusingly cautioned us to "not get our expectations up." Despite this peculiar interaction, the hospitality at Mission remained consistent with our previous experiences.

We only requested one clue during the game, and in our defence, a team member was already on the verge of solving the part where we briefly got stuck. While the room proved to be enjoyable, its dated feel was evident. Perhaps a refresh or a new addition from the beloved Mission brand could be in the works. Nevertheless, the theme was executed incredibly well, delivering an eerie and occasionally frightening atmosphere. The incorporation of high-tech puzzles elevated the overall theming. However, some scavenging and hunting elements left room for the imagination.

In approximately 48 minutes, our team successfully escaped The Vampire Castle. In conclusion, our gratitude to Mission for consistently providing us with quality rooms. We eagerly anticipate what the future holds for this escape room venue.

Kyle:
In our final adventure at the George Street Mission Venue, Unstoppable proved to be an absolute standout. Walking in with the high expectations we've cultivated since our first Mission room, I can confidently say that Unstoppable delivered. The immersion was unparalleled from the moment we entered; it genuinely felt like stepping back in time, obtaining train tickets from an authentic machine. The puzzles seamlessly integrated with the theme, and after a bit of guidance in the middle phase, our team secured the win in the dying seconds. Once again, thoroughly enjoyed this experience, making it a fantastic way to conclude our time at the George Street Venue.

Simon: The setting of this escape room blew my mind it was that immersive. I think this room was probably the most physical interaction we have had with almost every part of the room and every prop available. The most notable props being the bombs, they were so well designed that it wasn't even like being in a movie but damn near in reality. I was sweating bullets! There were many ways in which the scenarios built a real sense of urgency. I give Mission Escape 10/10 for the setting and the immersion for this room, it was quite the adventure!

Kyle: *Spoilers*
Returning to the familiar Mission-branded rooms, we found ourselves back at the Pitt Street venue, reminiscent of our previous attempt at The Lost Mine what feels like ages ago. This time, our seasoned team tackled Dr. M. The storyline resonated well with us, and the room offered a pleasing mix of traditional locks and mechanical puzzles. Signs of age were evident, and interestingly, this room became the inspiration for our team name, 187 – Just ask Simon about that one. The room demanded a minimum of four participants, given certain challenges requiring everyone's arm's length. A laser section added an extra layer of excitement, though my size ruled me out from taking on that particular challenge. True to Mission's reputation, we thoroughly enjoyed our time, successfully beating the clock once again, leaving with smiles on our faces.

Simon: Ahhhhhhhh ...... I feel like I need to address this before we get into this review. My math in this particular game let me down, which was frustrating because I actually thought I contributed well up until this point towards the end of the game. Just having flashbacks to high school math class where my teacher asked me to find 30% of 100, which my answer was 25. Years later, now with a Diploma and Bachelors Degree this still gets me rattled and that particular moment reminded me that math and I don't go together! Anyway, this was a room that we had talked about going to since we first started looking at doing escape rooms and we finally managed to do it many escape rooms later. It was very well done, and with this being one of Mission Escape's first rooms, it is amazing to think that they came up with a room with challenging yet cohesive puzzles. The narrative was solid and the setting was very imersive. Being an older game I figured there would be a lot of elements that we would have seen before but so many of the puzzles were unique and very creative and fun! My only advice, don't forget your basic maths #187GVNG

Kyle:
Trapped! marked our 8th escape room adventure as a group and our 4th with the Mission brand. Once again, Mission delivered a top-tier experience with their commitment to quality and leadership in high-tech, mechanically-based puzzles. While the majority of the puzzles seamlessly fit the room's theme, there was one towards the end that felt a bit out of place, although we eventually cracked it. Notably, Trapped! became the first room where, as a team, we discovered Simon's struggle with opening the standard safe lock. Despite this, the overall immersion was excellent, the puzzles were cohesive, and, as always, we had a fantastic time at Mission.

Josh: (Will edit)

Simon: This room was the first time I had experienced an escape room by Mission Escape that wasn't really expansive, which was perfect as it added to the claustrophobic feel. Dont worry though, there was still plenty of room so you won't feel suffocated. Once again the setting was quite immersive and the puzzles were actually fairly difficult. There were also some physical activies to complete in this room which I had never done before in an escape room which made it unique! In this room, after months and months of being our teams ever trusty locksmith I was unable to open up a locked safe due to a dodgy lock. What's the phrase again ... a good tradesman always blames his tools?
I relinquished my title and gracefully handed it over to Kyle!

Kyle:
An absolutely astonishing experience! This escape room is a thrilling blend of fright and amazement. Assigned specific roles, we were fully engaged with tasks that heightened the tension throughout. As the designated camera person, I found myself genuinely scared, leading me to abandon my role by the end. The narrative is compelling, complemented by outstanding live acting – the second we've encountered from Mission, and it lived up to our high expectations. The level of immersion is unparalleled. Words fall short in capturing the true brilliance of this room. I've already organized two more groups to undergo this incredible experience. Don't miss out—book it now!

Simon: This is my favourite escape room that I have ever done! It feels like you are in a movie from start to finish. Mission escape has nailed this room. The live actors were phenomenal and really brought the dark and haunting narrative to life. This experience is like none other that I have done. Each player will have a different story, different tale, different things to both laugh and cry about after completing this room. Make no mistake, this room is not for the feint of heart, but to all those who complete it will never forget this experience. I personally would recommend this room for groups of 4+ but go with less if you are game enough! It's very difficult to talk about any event that happens without giving away a spoiler, which is a testament to how unbelievable this room is from start to finish. Be prepared to find out who your real friends are!

Your friend has disappeared. He had a strong interest in old folk tales and mysteries and was researching the legend of one of these stories. He mentioned he was travelling to where the legend originated but he never returned.

He spoke very little of his research but did mention that it was an ancient legend involving a mythical creature. If this creature was to be found, it would grant you any wish that you desire.

With limited knowledge about the situation, you go to his studio hoping to discover more about his investigation and his whereabouts.

Kyle:
We made it back to Mission but this time we are at the George Street Location. After being impressed with how well the Lost Mine was mechanically, we had high hopes for The Sacrifice. This was our first time taking on a room that had Live Actors but unfortunately again Dale had to fill in for Luke as he was unavailable. All that aside, I must say this room did not disappoint. It runs a very close second to my all time favourite of Mr Peppers. The sheer amount of content put into these rooms, the puzzles, the theatrics and the immersion was sensational. Not to mention it being one of the more scarier ones to date. 100 minutes to complete and we did so with a bit of time left in the tank, I can't recommend The Sacrifice enough.

Simon: This live action escape room is one that should be on every escapers list. The level of immersion is unreal and the understanding of what builds atmosphere was carefully thought through and perfectly executed. There were many times in this escape room where I finally understood why people do seemingly silly things at the wrong moment in scary movies. The setting and narrative of the room was very detailed. The puzzles were a combination of very challenging and narrative specific. The live actors did a fantastic job as well. This room is also firmly entrenched in my top 5 escape rooms. Mission Escape had again lived up to it's lofty standards.

Kyle:
Being my second room personally, I believe that we bit off more than we can chew. This room was largely mechanically based and I don't believe we were not at all ready for it. Luke unfortunately was not able to attend this one so we had our good friend Dale help out, but it was to no avail as we made it through I would say 85-90% completed before our gamesmaster had to stop us and run through the end so we managed to get our closure. Immersive but did struggle to get into the storyline at first. Would not recommend for new Escapers.

Josh: Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm a bit of a researcher. Basically, any time I buy something, do something, watch something I'm always looking for the best and will do what it takes to find things out. It's a large reason why I enjoy Escape Rooms and the biggest reason why we ended up at The Lost Mine for our second room as a group. After being captivated by the hobby in my first few rooms I knew I wanted to try one of the best. Wherever I looked online a familiar name kept on popping up: Mission Escape. Specifically, The Lost Mine. I had previously completed their Last Order Room in a previous life and was so excited to try this one out. We gathered the gang, minus Luke who was unavailable but reliably replaced by Dale. The room did not disappoint! Mission Escape's biggest selling point is that they are fully mechanical rooms, meaning there is no padlocks awkwardly placed about. Everything has a purpose and will operate on its own. Right from the get go we entered a small room that would serve as our Mine shaft elevator and it looked fantastic. Full immersion was immediate and would become a trademark of our visits to Mission. We knew this would be a step up on our first room given the transition from the first room to the second. Anyone who has done this room will know what I'm referencing, for the rest of you I won't spoil it but there is no half measures in the Lost Mine even just moving between rooms and spaces. My least favourite part of the room was just how fiddly some of the different aspects were which cost us valuable time. There is one particular section (Again, no spoilers) where you need to line up some lasers. We had the solution to the puzzle but until each of the lasers was lined up exactly right it would not trigger. This took us far longer than it needed as each laser was reliant on the previous and I believe this was the biggest reason we did not quite get out of the room in time. For our second room though, and first with a new crew member, we were relatively happy with our performance.
The Simon WTF are you doing moment of the Game: This will be a regular segment in my reviews moving forward as it seems to happen at least once a game where three of us will look at each other in disbelief before absolutely dying of laughter at something our very intelligent, yet seemingly from time to time dim witted friend has done. The Lost Mine's moment came right towards the end. Within the room you need to nominate one member of your party to go separate from the rest of you. It is at this moment you need to decide if that person will be sacrificed. When I tell you that we sacrificed Simon before the sentence even finished I am not lying. That boy was dead to us. Honourable mention to Kyle, who we thought had got lost leaving the room, only to find out that he had in fact got a major cramp and was being stretched out by special guest Dale.

Simon: This game had a lot of reviews on how spectacular it was in terms of the immersion, storyline and mechanics. Couple that with a lot of research into the best escape rooms in Sydney, a big build up and a lot of anticipation. Suffice to say the expectations for this room were high. It did not disappoint on everything I had read about it. The immersion was as good as I have ever experienced. The thought, effort and genuine care that was undertaken to create this room was evident. The mechanical props were next level and the puzzles involved a lot of interaction both physically and mentally. The only thing I would say is to make sure you are precise when solving the mechanical puzzle. There was a point where puzzles were not being solved due to minor precision issues with mechanics which takes time away from completing the room. To avoid giving away any spoilers, I would say an example of this in other escape rooms would be if you had the correct combination for a padlock but couldn't open it because one of the numbers wasn't aligned properly; a common and basic mistake to make in any escape room. The high level of detail in the room is mirrored by the level of difficulty therefore, every second counts! If you suspect a similar issue, let the game master know. I say this not as a criticism to Mission Escape, but because you may miss out on some unbelievable future puzzles and events by getting bogged down and not being wary of your time. In saying that, this room is difficult so maybe do a few escape rooms before attempting this one. That will help to shape your creative thinking and build anticipation for this room because trust me, this escape room does not disappoint! Mission Escape had really announced itself to us as one of the premier escape rooms in Sydney. Their reputation for being one of the best escape room companies is well deserved. Even though we disappointingly weren't able to complete this room, we knew we would definitely be coming back to Mission Escape. There were several points where you actually feel like you are in a movie and I think that alone was something that makes this room well worth experiencing.

Luke: Did not attend.
